Scandale began in 1932 when founder Robert Perrier was inspired by new fabric introduced to him by a salesman in France, where he was manufacturing corsetry and hosiery in a small factory. He then replaced the traditional laced-up corsetry with a delicate and light-to-the-touch girdle. His assistant exclaimed 'It's a scandal!' when she saw it.
